Every August, Katete becomes the center of the Chewa kingdom as chiefs from Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique gather to pay homage to Kalonga Gawa Undi. The Kulamba ceremony is not only a Thanksgiving for the harvest but also a vital forum for discussing community welfare.
The ceremony is electrified by the presence of the Gule Wamkulu, a secret society of dancers recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Their intricate masks and dramatic performances represent the spirit world and ancestral wisdom.
